North Korean 3G network hits 19,000 subscribers - News
North Korea's first and only public cellular telephone network attracted 19,200 subscribers after just over three months in business.
Koryolink started operating on December 15 last year and signed up 1,694 customers by the end of last year, with a further 17,500 sign-ups during the first quarter, Orascom Telecom said in its first quarter results announcement.
The network generated modest earnings of US$312,000 for its operators in the first quarter, before accounting for interest payments, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Orascom did not disclose whether the network made a profit or a loss for the period.

KARACHI: China Mobile Pakistan has planned to maximise the coverage capacity of its cellular phone operator-Zong-by increasing its number of cellular sites up to 9,000 across the country with an investment of $500 million by the end of 2009.
Official sources told Daily Times that China Mobile has planned to double Zong's cell sites in various parts of the country in order to facilitate their subscribers with smooth and fast signals traffic. It has established nearly 4,500 cellular cities in different metropolis and small cities so far.
This will be one of the largest cellular cities project ever planned by any of the other operators. According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the country had overall 26,300 cellular cities by the end of 2008. Five operators have added 8,966 networking sites in the first half of the current fiscal year 2008-09.
The Chinese company has invested $1.66 billion so far in Pakistan, including $600 billion invested in the closing fiscal year 2008-09, which is a handsome contribution to foreign direct investment (FDI) in telecommunication and IT industry.
According to the officials, the company will invest more to increase its number of services and sale centres across the country that would also generate more number of job opportunities. Currently, the company has provided nearly 45,000 under the brand of Zong.
PTA in its latest report noted that the Zong subscribers' base is the fastest growing among other four competitors. Its users' base jumped to 6 percent of the overall market share from 2 percent in 2008. However, Zong's subscribers have increased to 6.23 million by the end of May, which is almost 6.7 percent of the overall 93.138 million subscribers' pie.
The telecom regulator further stated that Zong has penetrated aggressively in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Zong has also expanded it network to hilly cities of Northern Areas like Rakaposhi.

KARACHI: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) would shift its fixed line numbering plan from 7 to 8 digit series in Lahore and Karachi as per directives of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). As per details, Digit 3 will be added in all existing 7 digits numbers of Karachi and Lahore except the numbers starting from 9. Digit 9 will be added in all existing numbers starting from 9. An important point to remember is the numbers are being added to existing numbers not area codes, with the exemption of army exchanges which would remain same. staff report

Cellular growth up as subscribers reach 93.1m
LAHORE - Cellular growth picked up considerably to 1.5 per cent on month on month basis in May as overall subscribers increased to 93.1 million with Ufone and Warid each capturing 12.1pc of the net additions, keeping their market share relatively flat.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, the Mobilink continued to gain momentum, posting the highest additions of 431K, Zong was again the most improved with respect to its subscribers while Telenor improved market share slightly.
Telecom experts said that the May data have surpassed their expectations however they estimated the cellular subscribers would likely end the year at 93.7m.
According to latest PTA data, the addition rate picked up significantly, to 1.5 per cent in May after registering 0.6 per cent in Mar, reflecting the highest MoM increase in FY09E. Net additions for May crossed the million mark to weigh in at 1.2m subscribers, 2.2 times Apr levels. Over the longer term however, the declining trend continued with the rolling 12-month industry average dropping further, albeit slightly - 537K subscribers as of May versus 579K in the previous month.
Mobilink continued to gain momentum in May, posting the highest additions of 431K subscribers- a month, which represents 37.1 per cent of the net adds and also three times its additions for Apr. With the cellular giant back in action, the boost in additions has helped stabilize its market share at 30.9 per cent, which represents a comfortable lead over its competitors.
Relatively, Zong remained the most improved through May as well, adding 135K subs - a 2.2 per cent MoM improvement in its subscriber base. Telenor posted the second highest additions of 375K subscribers which helped increase its market share slightly to 22.0%, maintaining its position as the second largest operator. Warid and Ufone managed to remain flat in terms of market share after each captured 12.1% of net additions.
Instaphone continued to experience attrition in its base, posting deletions to the tune of 76K subscribers which represent a significant decline of 45 per cent MoM.
A telecom industry expert Omair Chughtai stated that FY09YTD remained weak but tail-end boost could help surpass estimates. The PTA reported cellular teledensity at 57.9% as of May, up 0.8% MoM. The addition rate remained sluggish at 537K subs on average through FY09YTD which represents a 74.1% decline from FY08 levels of 2.1m. He said that May figures however, have already surpassed the initial expectation of 92.9mn subscribers for FY09E.
Withdrawal of proposed tax on SMS welcomed
KARACHI: Cellular phone companies welcomed the withdrawal of 20 piasas proposed tax per Short Messaging Service (SMS) and added that all other budgetary measures will bode well for the consumers and sector.
They said that the government's decisions to remove and decrease duties on telephone service will have a positive impact on the consumption pattern of the users as it will directly enhance the operators and government's revenue with handsome growth.
In the Finance Bill 2009-10, the federal excise duty (FED) and general sales tax (GST) has been reduced to 19.5 percent from 21 percent. The SIM Activation Tax has been slashed to Rs 250 from Rs 500 per connection, Rs 250 regulatory duty has been removed and customs duty has been cut to Rs 250 from Rs 500 per handset.
Executive Ufone, Moazzam Ali Khan, said the government's decision to minimise the tax burden is 'people friendly' as a great number of consumers frequently use text services through company's SMS packages. He added that all the tax reductions will also favour the company and government's revenues because the increase of services consumption will also improve their revenues. Ufone, one of the leading cellular phone operators with nearly 20 million subscribers, offers monthly and daily SMS bundles to its consumers.
According to available PTA data, around 11 billion SMS were exchanged in the last quarter of 2008. SMS are frequently exchanged for marketing and advertisement purposes that also include SMS banking. Electronic media widely receives feedback from SMS that will be continued with the existing pace after the new decision remains intact. An official of Zong, Amir Pasha also hailed the government's decision of taking back proposed 20 paisas tax on SMS, saying it will increase the text traffic of the users in the current accelerated pace.
He mentioned that around 0.15 million deaf and dumb customers use message service through different networks of cellular phone companies and will get benefit.
Zong, having fastest growing subscribers' base in the current fiscal year, has introduced daily SMS bundle package first in the sector for its users. Telecom analysts forecast a 20 paisas levy per SMS in addition to the FED and GST will hit the SMS traffic on the network of cellular phone companies.
They said that all the SMS packages offered by various mobile operators will end as each SMS cost will witness whopping surge after the proposed tax.
If a company offers 500 SMS against Rs 2.99 including 21 percent FED/GST, it charges 0.723 paisa per SMS. Now with the imposition of proposed 20 paisas tax, the SMS cost will increase to 20.723 paisa per SMS, which is 2,666 percent up with the existing price.
However, the government would be estimated to earn Rs 2.2 billion in the quarter keeping in view the latest available SMS traffic data of PTA, 11 billion.
But analysts said the SMS traffic will come down sharply if the duties are imposed on it as more than 40 percent users of the total 93.138 million base prefer to communicate with text rather than voice service.
Almost all the operators have started SMS services in Urdu that benefit their users in rural areas.

Pakistan cellular networks GPRS/EDGE speed comparison
Here are the GPRS/EDGE speed comparisons of Pakistani mobile networks which I did in about two weeks using SonyEricsson J300i and Nokia 6600, Nokia N70 mobile devices. My Location was Faisalabad city(Third largest city of Paksitan). As I'm living in big city surrounded by mobile signal towers got no signal problems, in short signals quality was good by all networks. In the chart below I am comparing Ufone, Zong Pakistan, Telenor Pakistan, Waridtel Pakistan and Mobilink Pakistan (Currently these are the networks in Pakistan who are providing GPRS/EDGE mobile internet data services).
In the chart below is average GPRS disconnections comparison by the networks of every day. Ufone and Mobilink are the baddest gprs service providers (at least these days). Ufone GPRS is useless at nights and Mobilink's gprs is 24hours useless too many disconnections the more you connect the more you are charged for the data packets (64KB). Telenor Pakistan gives 4 confirm disconnections every day and at set times, one at midnight(12am), one in the morning(7am), one afternoon(12pm and one at evening(6pm). Telenor keeps on making difference between their disconnection times. Only Zong and Warid provides 24hours gprs service without any disconnection.
Some other things you should know:
- Only Zong is providing different type of data packages, 8kb chunks package, 64kb packets package, time based package.
- Only Zong is providing Unlimited GPRS/EDGE package in Pakistan and Mobilink(mobilink have unlimited data package for postpaid customers only), all others are fooling their customers and Telenor Paksitan is at top in fooling their customers in all kind of mobile phone packages and rates. In fact others have limits in their UNLIMITED gprs packages :)

Tiny, free Photoshop alternative Fotographix hits Beta 3
Fotografix is an amazing example of what creative developers can accomplish in less than one meg. The 680Kb portable application is a very capable image editor and provides nearly all the same functionality I utilize in Photoshop on a daily basis. It was a no-brainer to include in my list of 40 apps you can download in two seconds.
Only a few changes have taken place, but they're important additions. First and foremost, documentation has been beefed up and now covers nearly every Fotografix feature. As far as editing function go, layers can now be merged down and you can flatten an image in one fell swoop. An external paste command has been added as well: control-v works with the internal Fotografix clipboard, while shift+control+v will paste the contents of your Windows clipboard.
The last time this little gem hit DownloadSquad, the developer's server got hammered and the download became inaccessible. Fortunately, it's now mirrored on Freeware Files.
